National Taiwan University
The predecessor of National Taiwan University (NTU), Taihoku Imperial University, was established in 1928. NTU’s substantial land holdings are distributed in Taipei, Yilan, Hsinchu, Yunlin and in the mountains of central Taiwan, offering students and teachers alike an ecologically diverse research environment. With a beautiful campus, a cultured atmosphere, a complete knowledge map, an extensive library collection, and technologically advanced facilities, NTU offers an attractive teaching and research environment. It may justly be called the most comprehensive research university in Taiwan.
NTU currently encompasses 12 colleges: Liberal Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Bioresources and Agriculture, Management, Public Health, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Law, and Life Science. It is made up of 56 departments, 112 institutes, 18 degree programs, over 50 international or university-level research centers, an experimental forest, and three affiliated hospitals. NTU has research expertise and course offerings in all major academic fields, including the natural sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts, which no other institution of higher learning in Taiwan can match, giving students a diversity of quality learning experiences. In recent years, NTU has promoted new learning models such as the Flipped Classroom (FC), Open Courseware (OCW), and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), integrating digital technology into pedagogy and expanding learning beyond the confines of the classroom and the textbook.
NTU enjoys an excellent international reputation in both research and teaching. In 19 of the 22 academic fields in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, scholars at NTU have produced academic papers listed as “most-cited.” NTU is also ranked in the top 100 institutions of higher learning in international indices. In the 2018 QS World University Rankings, for instance, NTU scored in the top 100 in 34 academic fields.
Outlook: To stand tall in the Chinese cultural sphere, to adopt an international outlook, to stress independent thinking, to uphold the spirit of innovation, to endeavor to do visionary academic research, to develop professional skills, to foster outstanding talent, and to initiate students into a full and liberating life of learning.
