National Taiwan University System
In consideration of their geographical proximity in Da-an District of Taipei City and their academic complementarity, National Taiwan University (NTU), National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) decided to establish the National Taiwan University System, in order to facilitate resource sharing, improve student learning outcomes, enhance pedagogy and research, augment social services and make a greater contribution to society, with the objective of becoming one of the world’s top university systems.
The nearly 60,000 students and teachers who belong to the System can now share library, computer, and Internet services, enjoy discounts in university stores, and make use of taxi services and other resources. There are also special rates for meeting venues, athletic facilities, and parking lots. Students can take classes at all three institutions, making use of mutual credit recognition and inter-university credit programs. There are also diverse international cultural activities for students to participate in. Future projects include enhanced resource sharing, for instance, cross appointment at all three schools or joint appointment at two, Chinese language pedagogy resource integration, a common precision instruments center, a technical transfer matchmaking platform to enable cooperation between academia and industry, and an academic research information exchange platform.
The expected benefits of the system include:
- To realize excellence in teaching and research via resource integration.
- To raise international recognition and competitiveness.
- To expand social services.
- To diversify learning activities and widen students’ academic horizons.
- To facilitate community development via the extended campus of the university system.
By implementing integration and cooperation mechanisms, the National Taiwan University System shall make the best use of the complementary strengths of the three institutions, raising educational quality and pursuing academic excellence. We intend it to serve as a model university system in Taiwan, and will endeavor to become one of the world’s top university systems.

National Taiwan University
The predecessor of National Taiwan University (NTU), Taihoku Imperial University, was established in 1928. NTU’s substantial land holdings are distributed in Taipei, Yilan, Hsinchu, Yunlin and in the mountains of central Taiwan, offering students and teachers alike an ecologically diverse research environment. With a beautiful campus, a cultured atmosphere, a complete knowledge map, an extensive library collection, and technologically advanced facilities, NTU offers an attractive teaching and research environment. It may justly be called the most comprehensive research university in Taiwan.
NTU currently encompasses 12 colleges: Liberal Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Bioresources and Agriculture, Management, Public Health, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Law, and Life Science. It is made up of 56 departments, 112 institutes, 18 degree programs, over 50 international or university-level research centers, an experimental forest, and three affiliated hospitals. NTU has research expertise and course offerings in all major academic fields, including the natural sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts, which no other institution of higher learning in Taiwan can match, giving students a diversity of quality learning experiences. In recent years, NTU has promoted new learning models such as the Flipped Classroom (FC), Open Courseware (OCW), and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), integrating digital technology into pedagogy and expanding learning beyond the confines of the classroom and the textbook.
NTU enjoys an excellent international reputation in both research and teaching. In 19 of the 22 academic fields in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, scholars at NTU have produced academic papers listed as “most-cited.” NTU is also ranked in the top 100 institutions of higher learning in international indices. In the 2018 QS World University Rankings, for instance, NTU scored in the top 100 in 34 academic fields.

NTNU has diversified from its initial focus on teacher training into a comprehensive university. As a pioneering institution with a leading status in a wide spectrum of fields including education, music, fine arts, sports, and literature, NTNU is well-recognized internationally for its academic excellence.
NTNU consists of 62 departments and graduate institutes under 9 colleges—Education, Liberal Arts, Science, Arts, Technology and Engineering, Sports and Recreation, Music, Management, and International Studies and Social Sciences. NTNU serves as a cradle for teachers of secondary education and of Chinese as a second language; an incubator for exceptional talents in the field of humanities, arts, and music, as well as for gold medalists in sports; and a training base for engineers and for global business management minds. The interdisciplinary learning experiences it offers empower students to develop leadership, creativity, critical thinking and international mobility capabilities.

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology
The National Taiwan University of Science and Technology was established on August 1, 1974, as the National Taiwan Institute of Technology, the first higher education institution of its kind within our nation’s technical and vocational education system. From the beginning, the school’s goal has been to contribute to Taiwan’s economic development through training the manpower and conducting the research most needed for the advance of our industrial and technological capabilities.
The scope and direction of our education and research have grown and changed along with Taiwan itself, focusing on new fields of research, interdisciplinary training and collaboration, better ways of working together with industry, and international outreach. Our faculty and students regularly receive top international awards for innovative product and concept design. We participate in research projects and training programs with partners around the world. Our graduate degree programs are helping to develop the next generation of faculty and researchers not only for Taiwan but also for other countries both near and far.
Our efforts over more than forty years have enabled us to stand proudly in the top rank of Taiwan’s universities in a wide range of international university rankings. We are confident that our focus on applied research, our enthusiasm for innovation, our international outlook, and our profound dedication to providing each rising generation of young people with both expertise and vision promise a bright future for our society and the world.
